29.02.08 Siemens Technology for State-of-the-art Hospital in Portugal
In the healthcare arena, Siemens is known for innovative medical technology and the latest medical information systems. The new Hospital da Luz in Lisbon, Portugal, is a prime example of how close cooperation with different Siemens sectors can provide for efficient and highly modern, comprehensive solutions in this case with the planning, restructuring, and implementation of the new hospital. The private hospital operator is part of the Espírito Santo Saúde (ESS) investment group and maintain 14 smaller healthcare centers, private hospitals, and rehabilitation facilities in Portugal. The hospital is the first that ESS has built and managed itself. Siemens Healthcare incorporated its imaging modalities and IT solutions with technologies and know-how from other Siemens sectors. As in many other countries, a new reform in the hospital system has left room for more private investors in the market. This brings new opportunities, but also the necessity for private hospitals to distinguish themselves from other privately managed healthcare providers – where infrastructure, rehabilitation facilities, and state-of-the-art medical and information technology are key factors in meeting patient demands. “Especially when looking at the integration of various information technologies, Siemens appeared to be the only company with the corresponding capacity,” say Antão the Chief Information, Organization, and Processes Officer (CIO) at ESS. Hospital da Luz is supported by the workflow-management IT-solution Soarian®, which is linked to the multifunctional terminal HiMed Cockpit. Together, they provide comprehensive solutions for facility management and improve the overall workflow. Antão continues, “With Soarian and the HiMed Cockpit system, we can immediately access patient data and medical records anywhere in the hospital, even at the patient’s bedside, simplifying work enormously.”
